In the winter of 2013 I spent more money than seemed reasonable on a subscriptions for pocket notebooks from a small company called Field Notes. The first box arrived a few days later and included a click pen a pencil, and a “band of rubber,” along with two three-packs of bright blue pocket notebooks.

Everything about the subscription and the product was fresh. The idea, the smell, the look…all of it. This was before there were subscription boxes for everything you can imagine. For me, the little notebooks were a real joy in an otherwise bleak winter.

Fast forward to 2020, when the world was slipping through our collective fingers. Everything seemed off, and one night while trying to avoid the news, I stumbled again upon those little notebooks, this time on a Facebook group called “Field Nuts.” There were hundreds of people talking about the most recent quarterly release and something that I did not expect, a limited release.

A little box arrived a week or so later. With the same pen, the same “band of rubber,” and the same twinge of joy that came the last time around, but this time, the notebooks looked different.

What is so special about Field Notes?

Why do so many people collect these little pocket notebooks? Why do people fight to grab a pack of notebooks…
